Wildlife of America: the Pronghorn, also known as "Pronghorn Antelope"
The pronghorn is the fastest mammal in North America, and with a top speed of 70 to 100 kilometers an hour, it is the fastest mammal that can maintain its pace over a distance in the world. The cheetah is faster than a pronghorn, for short sprints, but after a few dozen yards, no animal in the world can match its pace.
The pronghorn has sharp senses to match its speed, most notably, giant eyes, nearly the size of those of an elephant, but on a body the size of a goat. With these giant eyes, the pronghorn can spot a suspicious movement nearly 5 kilometers away.
Although the pronghorn had become rare by the 1920's careful and consistent wildlife conservation efforts, one of the places where the United States most stands out as a nation, have returned the pronghorn to its rightful place, and approximately one million pronghorn roam the Great Plains today.
