US aviation: the Lockheed Constellation. Entering
airline service in 1945, the Lockheed Constellation was larger, faster,
longer ranged, and more graceful, with its 'dolphin' profile than other
airliners of its day. Nevertheless, it is not this generally superior
performance which made the Constellation special, and which ties it to
flight today. What made the Constellation special was its use of cabin
pressurization.
The
reason that cabin pressurization is so important is that it allows the
airplane to fly higher, notably, fly above most storms.
